Empowering Human Performance: Anna Gasser
Sometimes childhood isn’t used to build the victories of the future, but to learn to ride the wind. Anna Gasser was born amid the elements: daughter, sister and, at the same time, mother of nature itself. She grew up in a theatre of air and gravity, where every trick is a calculated risk, every evolution a step towards eternity. Her career is a monument to perseverance, to craftsmanship that borders on art, to rebirth as a tool for analysing the world. She is the most mature voice in contemporary Big air; she has challenged adolescence, time and herself to build her own unique, technical and visionary language.
In the beginning, there was gymnastics: an agile body, daring mind and pure discipline. Then the filter of adolescence made her realise the price of all that training; a cost that was too high for a young woman, giving up on freedom in a way that she was not prepared to pay. For three years, she took a break from sport, as if she was looking for a different breath, a new calling. Then snowboarding appeared; a sudden and therefore indelible spark. Love at first sight, instant discovery. The lure was all-encompassing; she climbed onto a board and her sporting life would never be the same again. She became the first woman to complete a Cab Double Cork 900, a jump that was at the same time a manifesto for courage and progress, an unprecedented Darwinian law. Since then, every evolution has also been a revolution; she didn’t chase difficulty, she reinvented it. She has grown up, transformed herself, become a pioneer; the solitude of prime numbers, of extreme rotations, elevating Big air into something worthy of a museum exhibit.
The Games arrived: at PyeongChang 2018 she landed on the gold medal; and again at Beijing 2022, she confirmed her dominance, in the air and in the mind. Over her adversaries, over the elements, over her own thirst for glory. Two Olympic titles that are not mere triumphs, but steps along a journey started much earlier, in the silence of her choices, in the courage to reinvent herself again and again, at an age that often, in the hyper-professional sports of the Third Millennium, is already one of no return. Over the years she has built a record that seems to have been carved in the photographic magic of the golden hour, but which shines in the light of a constantly renewing dawn. Inexhaustible yet fresh; X Games, world medals, World Cup victories. They are not just numbers but tiles in a mosaic that has redefined Big air. Everything here has a symbolic weight, not just for her, but for those who will come after, and it will take years to get the distance from so much beauty and to observe, from afar and in its entirety, the gigantic nature of her career/artwork.
A progress that continues, unaware of the calendar and the years that are accumulating. A gesture that is a perpetual coronation. She is no longer a promising youngster, but a queen ruling her realm, one of rotations, air and memory; the experimental ability of those who explore the limits, but also the testimony of those who know that growing old is the opportunity of a lifetime. She has decided to grant herself and to grant us one final season before retiring, after Milano Cortina 2026, and she will do so with the serenity of someone who is no longer asking for anything; the perfect end to a story that began in the mind of a girl who didn’t want to be trapped in a cage, and came to life over thousands of dreamlike pages. Far beyond reality. A timeless fantasy. Legend has it that Anna keeps listening to her Harry Potter audiobooks before a race, and, in the end, we wouldn’t be surprised to find out, sooner or later, that behind her infinite dance with gravity she really did get a helping hand from magic. Real magic, learned at Hogwarts.
